No one expects their relationship or marriage to turn into a high drama for high stakes. Yet a lot is at stake during a separation, one of the most emotionally-trying periods of anyone's life: disappointment, disillusionment, hurt feelings, wounded pride and threatened security. At the same time you want to ensure that your children are shielded and provided for, that assets are protected and divided fairly, that financial stability is assured and that both spouses have strong representation. You need a separation agreement that is clear and fair.

It's not a matter of fixing blame or "punishing" anyone. It's simply ensuring that neither side has an unfair advantage because of their position, income and investments, or the size of their retirement plan.

We truly wish all couples the very best when they're about to set out on a shared life. But thinking about the unthinkable before saying "I do" can help avoid potential pitfalls that, sadly, sometimes arise down the road. Whether it's dealing with pre-marital arrangements,  common law relationships or same sex issues, we can guide you through appropriate ways to protect everyone's interests.

No matter how sensitive your situation might be, we've helped countless people through the agony of a relationship gone bad. Feel free to phone Christine Lutz, our Family Law Clerk, Joel Miller the chair of our Family Law group, or any of our family law lawyers: Tracy Warne QC, D. John Hamilton, Paul Pellman, Bobbi Olsen or Elizabeth Mourao.
