Associate Bobbi Olsen divides her work between family law and civil litigation.

“Working in two parallel areas,” Bobbi asserts, “allows me to weigh and outline the options for a client dispassionately, recognising the degree of stress and cost involved. The same factors play out in both my family law work and litigation, and serve the people I work with well.”

As a litigator, Bobbi’s work ranges from negotiated settlements to acrimonious disputes in contentious litigation. She has a successful track record in extensive trial and appeal work, conducting numerous complex trials, motions, Hague Applications, and Charter arguments.

Her prior experience as an intellectual property contract negotiator at a large Canadian university formed the basis for Bobbi’s early, precise recognition of the margins of a potential settlement, and she understands the financial and emotional implications favouring prompt and thorough settlement of a matter.

Bobbi first explored advanced family law issues while completing her Masters in Family Law at Osgoode Hall. She’s been a regular guest lecturer at Humber College as well as at its joint program with the University of Guelph, speaking on topics ranging from broad family law issues to specific advocacy and litigation skills. Bobbi is a member of the Family Law Executive of the Ontario Bar Association. Because of her expertise in Crown wardship matters, Bobbi was requested to prepare a submission for the Ontario Bar Association to the Ontario Legislature regarding Bill 179 dealing with the issue of maintaining contact with the biological relatives following adoption of Crown Wards.

To balance her work life, Bobbi is an avid reader, likes to travel and participates in wine tasting festivals and events.

“My outside interests actually help me be a better lawyer,” Bobbi maintains. “I learn to see and appreciate subtleties, nuance and texture from reading, travelling and learning about wine. It’s a skill that I bring with me into my work as a family lawyer as well as a litigator because spotting these things can help clients reach a successful outcome.”
