“Too often in family law, people face making decisions swiftly when emotions are running high,” partner Joel Miller observes of his 40-some years of practice.
“I see my role as helping clients analyse the situation they're facing and giving them options,” he continues. “Those options aren't always attractive but at least the client can make a thoughtful decision, using family law to help them achieve their goals as best they can under the circumstances.”
This very practical outlook is just one reason why Joel enjoys an excellent reputation as one of the leading Family Law lawyers in the area.
Above all, Joel is an excellent listener which is why his reputation is built on a proven ability to mediate, coupling imaginative thinking, a sensible approach and strategic insight into the best interests of both sides to resolve thorny, contentious issues. It’s how he gets results.
Moreover, Joel knows from experience that many disputes can be resolved before going to trial. For example, one approach Joel employs in separation dispute resolution is to identify common concerns of both parties to reach broad mutual agreement. He searches for an equitable, dignified, efficient, and cost effective conclusion of a couple’s matrimonial affairs and assets without rushing to court.
That said, Joel acts swiftly in court to address immediate concerns and help clients gain control over their lives and achieve their best possible outcome.
Joel chairs the Family Law Group and appears before all levels of Ontario courts including the Court of Appeal. Joel is also a Dispute Resolution Officer for the family division of the Superior Court of Ontario in Toronto, a position he currently holds.
“I go to court to protect my client,” he notes, “but there are usually better ways to resolve a painful Family Law matter.”
Joel has presented papers at various national family law conferences including Grandparents, Parents and Kids: Are We In Changing Times? dealing with grandparent rights, and speaks frequently on family law issues. Joel is a former director of the Toronto Collaborative Law Association.
